Most Creative Businesses in West Hollywood

Creative City Awards: Honoring Innovation in Business | West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce | West Hollywood, CA.

Artwork by Ruben Esparza of Red Studios

Tonight, the Chamber will honor some of the most creative business in West Hollywood.  Some of our faves have been nominated.  Last year, Vanity Girl was nominated for Creative Communications, for the way that I’ve been able to put my brand on the map — with a little bit of Online Fame plus a little bit of Offline elbow grease.  I lost out to a little known company called HBO (hello!), but honestly!  That was truly a case of, “I’m just happy to be nominated!”

At any rate, this year I found myself behind the camera, producing some of the pre-event pieces and even working on capturing the night.  More of that to come – but in the meantime make sure to click on the link above to see if one of your favorite WeHo Businesses have been nominated!

Fragola Showroom: Upscale clothing … discount prices

So, a couple of weeks ago the ladies of FourPlayGo (@mrsoaround the world @lolastravels and @jetsetextra) and I did a whole glam makeover and photo shoot with some of my favorite West Hollywood Glam Makers.  Maleeza of Fragola Showroom supplied venue, clothes, shoes and campagne;  Charles Hopkins did the photography; Cat did the syling; and Lyric did hair & makeup.  Celebrity jeweler David outfitted us in jewels.  Photos from that shoot are coming … and here are some from the entire trip.

I really wanted them to feel MY West Hollywood … i.e. Vanity Girl For the Day!

If you want in on the action, Maleeza is having an IN-SANE sale this weekend.  Designer names … low low prices.  Tell her VanityGirl sent you and Happy Shopping!  Make sure to Instagram me if you pick anything up @VanityGirlHollywood.

A Free Ride in West Hollywood?

West Hollywood Trolley Launch | Splash Magazines | Los Angeles.

Yes – there is!  Check out Christy’s article in Splash Magazine.  In the meantime, here are the things I love about it:

1.  It is so damn cute.  The cheeky graphics will have you spending as much time looking at the outside as enjoying the inside.

2.  The route.  The loop will take you all along the corridor where some of our favorite bars serve up the fun.

3.  The music.  Yep!  There is awesome music curated by a very cool DJ just for the Trolley.

4.  Photo Booth.  It wasn’t up and running during our sneak peek, but rumor has it there will be a place to take pics!

5.  The price.  As in free.  ‘Nuff said.

See you on the trolley!  And if you LOVE it, make sure to Instagram or Tweet about it!

White Vanity

via Vanity Girl Hollywood on Facebook.

This white Broadway table top vanity found a home with #RealVanityGirl of OC Tara Maresa.  I love the framed photos of some of her favorite brands (Chanel is one of my faves too!) and this sleek little desk with storage tuft seating.

Tara also won tickets from us to the PhamExpo where Paw Pallette and Charmed Cosmetics used our vanities to bling out their trade booths.  I can’t wait to hear what some of her favorite things were from that show.

Launching your dream business …

Last Thursday,  social media expert Beverly Macy (author, host, educator, thought-leader extraordinaire) interviewed me on her  Social Media and business radio show.  My story was really about how I Followed My Dream … and created Vanity Girl Hollywood after getting laid off.

Now that we are five years in, I sometimes lose sight that this all started out of an idea  I had during a cheer-up session at the Burke Williams spa here in West hollywood.  They say that luck is where inspiration and perspiration intersect, right?

I was lucky – lucky that I had an angel investor who saw my track record, believed in me and respected my marketing chutzpah and put his talent and resources behind this fledgeling dream.

Lucky that I had friends and family who supported this dream, and helped me keep it alive when I didn’t think I could do it.

Lucky that Social Media was this free platform, where I could take my PR and Guerilla marketing tactics to the web and create a machine that would market 24/7, 365. (Big thanks to Alaia Williams for showing me how to blog and use Twitter!)

Lucky that celebrities like Kim Kardashian and YouTube gurus like Kandee Johnson would love this product, and choose to support another female entrepreneur.

And most of all, lucky that a girl named Crystal in Ohio bought that first vanity (only 2 days after I launched my eBay store and blog which I built myself!)and proved that there were THOUSANDS of girls out there who wanted a Backstage Hollywood moment of her very own. I LOVE and appreciate my Vanity Girls more than words could ever express.

Please take a listen.  And if it inspires you to follow a dream – any dream – please share it here or of course – find me on Social Media.

Vanity Girl and the Miss USA Pageant

Miss Connecticut crowned Miss USA 2013 via MSN News

So I just got back from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.  The hotel was even more sparkly than usual, as 51 bona fide US beauty queens and a bevy of teen hopefuls and others descended on the Vegas property to watch Miss Connecticut, Erin Brady, win the coveted title.  What I especially loved about her, is that she proudly talked about her math roots, and her “secret glamour” side.

We all have it… this secret glamour side. I was actually invited to Vegas by my friend, celebrity MUA and author, Kenetia Lee who works with the Trump Organization.  She put together a brand new workshop called Confidently Beautiful and it was attended by many  Miss Teen USA hopefuls and other women and girls, some who pageant and others who don’t, around what Confidently Beautiful means to them.

She invited me to be a panelist along with 2012 Miss USA Nana Meriwether, Cathryn Kennedy of St. Jude’s, Dorothy Evans Miss USA Fitness Expert and Dr. Lisa Palmer of Florida to serve as role models and share our very honest journeys with the attendees.  It also confronted us about our own personal journey with that elusive question of “what is confidently beautiful?

It makes a lot of sense.  A large majority of my Vanity Girl customers are young teens, just coming into their own when it comes to beauty, body image and confidence.  Yes, we love our makeup.  But we also love what makes us beautiful on the inside, flaws and all.

I was very honored to share my story.  I was even more honored when these bright and beautiful young women, and some of their mothers who beautifully are still launching some of their dreams, came up to me afterwards to share their own entrepreneurial dreams and ask my advice on their burgeoning projects!  It’s honestly my favorite part, whenever I speak, to get a little of that one-on-one time afterward and hear if something I said resonated and fanned a little fire inside someone’s heart.

I also learned so much from my fellow panelists.  Here are just a couple of very quick takeaways I learned from these accomplished and beautiful women:

Nana:  She is sooooo accomplished at such a young age.  I was inspired by how she turns “haters” and naysayers into fuel for her dreams.

Lisa:  Balance.  She is such a proponent for taking care of yourself and setting healthy boundaries for yourself and your loved ones.

Cathryn:  Kindness.  As a CFO type, she would seem to be all about the financial bottom line, but it was her humanity that struck me most.

Dorothy:  Loving the skin in your in.  No matter the shape and size, there is always room to take care of your physical body.

Kenetia:  Be Fearless.  Bold.  Beautiful and Free.

So Kenetia, thank you for inviting me and giving me a platform to share my Vanity Girl story.  To the other panelists, thank you for sharing your stories (yes, even the ugly parts!) and wisdom with everyone, and most of all, to those beautiful, shiny teen faces who attended, thank you for listening and I AM SO EXCITED to see what’s next for all of you.

xoxo

My first time as a Parade Princess

Maxine Tatlonghari in PRIDE Parade 2013

My first time as a Parade Princess, PRIDE 2013 – Pinup Girl Style.

When I was in high school, I had been in a few parades as a Banner Girl carrying our school sign.  While it was always fun (we were even in the Hollywood Christmas parade), it was exhausting.  We wore these 3-inch boots and sometimes, well, let’s just say that marching after horses isn’t always fun.

Well, flash forward a few years 🙂 and my Chamber besty, Mylena Christina of LIFT) and I were invited as Board Members to sit in the Chamber convertible, and introduce EAT SHOP PLAY to the community.  How excited were we?

Well, I knew I wanted to go full GLAMAZON since it was PRIDE and you can be as over the top as you want to be here in WeHo.  So I decided to channel Mariah Carey and Marilyn Monroe (who BTW, is clearly a HUGE Real Vanity Girl inspiration for your gorgeous rooms! 🙂

HAIR:  I asked Tanya of Untamed Instincts to give me Mariah Carey diva hair.  She explained that the pinup style I usual favor features undulating curls that go downward, but Mariah has these waves that go outward.  And she wanted it to be BIG BIG. Like we could see it from miles away.  Which was the case, because my friend Miles said she could see my hair coming down the street!  Products used – Kevin Murphy and DermOrganics and lots of her technique, a curling iron and pin curls … and of course, a teasing brush!

MAKEUP:  My friend, stylist Joey Galon, introduced me to Hollywood MUA MaxiTone a couple of weeks ago and he is amazing.  Like he’s worked with Niecey Nash, Christina Milian and Lea Salonga, so I knew he would know how to bring out the best in my Filipino features.  I really loved how he got my skin so flawless (using his own line which is launching soon) and my eyes!  The orange and green and purples and lashes … oh my.  It was a makeup junkie’s dream!

FROCK:  What to wear, what to wear, what to wear? Well how lucky am I that Joey has a passion for preparing women for special occasions, so he had a few concepts in mind.  Given the colors of our Eat Shop Play Program, we opted for the orange.  I went to the Pinup Girl Boutique, and Natasha and the team helped me decide on the Monica Dress in Peach (close enough to orange!)  It was perfect.  Click here to read more about the dress.

If you’d like to see more pics – please check out my Instagram!  What about you?  Have you ever been in a parade?  Post a comment and or link below …

Maxine @VanityGirl at Perez Hilton’s Pajama Party

I love my JetsetExtra family.  Not only do I get to go on location with them, but as their Hollywood Insider I cover a lot of fun events and Red Carpets here in Tinsel Town.

And say what you want about Perez Hilton, he has taken celebrity blogging to a whole other level AND is a personality in his own right.  As a new Dad, he’s definitely showing a kinder, softer side and have you seen the bod lately?  Someone’s been hittin’ the gym in-between midnight feedings!

Anyhoo – we were invited to his Birthday Party which he did Pajama Style.  It was a lot of fun, here were some of the highlights:

FASHION NOTES:

The Elmo Onesie was a big hit with the guys.

Adrienne Maloof was Über sexy with a La Perla nod to Old School Hollywood Glam.

Sassy MJ of Shahs of Sunset was in head to toe Victoria Secret and Loubitans.

Jetset Stylist Jeannie Mai wore her pajama pants from Vietnam and a bustier and white jacket.

Jordan Sparks said that boyfriend Jason Derulo always wears his hat (how cute are they BTW?)

Sophie T. Simmons wore Victoria Secret with Jimmie Choo’s.

I rocked Jose Natori and my 1950’s roller do hair by Tanya of Untamed Instincts on Melrose was a hit.

TRAVEL NOTES:

Perez said his next trip was going to be US, probably Miami since he has the little one to consider.

Dancing With the Stars’ Mark Ballas completely charmed me when he spoke Japanese to me (no, I’m not Japanese but I took a post-college Gap Year there and absolutely loved it.)

Sophie just got back from North Carolina, and she says she loved it.

Jeannie Mai said her favorite fashion city is Singapore!

Celebrity Stylist Phu Styles said that her favorite fashion cities are NYC, Miami (lots of love for Miami that night), LA, Paris, Milan and Tokyo.

More later!
