My friend Manna is headed to New York for a whirlwind media tour and she is inviting all of you to join her in a Google Hangout hosted by Birchbox.  They are collaborating on a product called sheer glo shimmer lotion (I scored a bottle and can’t wait to try it)

Here are the deets on the hang out …

When:  Friday, 12/13 (it’s good luck) at 3pm EST.

Topics:  All things beauty

How we met …

Last Holiday Season, I sent out an email to all of my Vanity Girl customers for the Holidays – and one Pro Customer responded with a really lovely email. Turns out she is a beauty entrepreneur herself and owns a very cool cosmetics line named Manna Kadar Cosmetics.

We decided to meet for lunch at Le Pain here in WeHo, and she brought me some of her goodies like her signature bronzer (as seen at some of the hottest celebrity gifting suites) and her yummy smelling lip glosses.   We hit it off immediately.  With our mutual love of Paris (she was born there, I was an expat there) and our penchant for boy bands and business … that was a lunch that went really long and has since spawned lots of great business opportunities and my recent guest speaking opportunity at FIDM where she teaches in the Beauty Dept.  (BTW, huge shout out to the girls of the FIDM beauty department – I swear – it was like finding my Tribe! I can’t wait to see what these ambitious young women  … and a few men … do in their future careers.)

Anyway – it’s just really cool when you meet other female entrepreneurs, especially in the beauty space, that are as generous and fun as Manna.  She has great products and is just simply – a really cool chick!!

Ciao for Now –

Maxine

Special Thanks to another cool female entrepreneur and numerologist extraordinaire, Nidhi Handa, because every LA Business Girl needs awesome advice & insight!

Most Creative Businesses in West Hollywood

Creative City Awards: Honoring Innovation in Business | West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce | West Hollywood, CA.

Artwork by Ruben Esparza of Red Studios

Tonight, the Chamber will honor some of the most creative business in West Hollywood.  Some of our faves have been nominated.  Last year, Vanity Girl was nominated for Creative Communications, for the way that I’ve been able to put my brand on the map — with a little bit of Online Fame plus a little bit of Offline elbow grease.  I lost out to a little known company called HBO (hello!), but honestly!  That was truly a case of, “I’m just happy to be nominated!”

At any rate, this year I found myself behind the camera, producing some of the pre-event pieces and even working on capturing the night.  More of that to come – but in the meantime make sure to click on the link above to see if one of your favorite WeHo Businesses have been nominated!

Fragola Showroom: Upscale clothing … discount prices

So, a couple of weeks ago the ladies of FourPlayGo (@mrsoaround the world @lolastravels and @jetsetextra) and I did a whole glam makeover and photo shoot with some of my favorite West Hollywood Glam Makers.  Maleeza of Fragola Showroom supplied venue, clothes, shoes and campagne;  Charles Hopkins did the photography; Cat did the syling; and Lyric did hair & makeup.  Celebrity jeweler David outfitted us in jewels.  Photos from that shoot are coming … and here are some from the entire trip.

I really wanted them to feel MY West Hollywood … i.e. Vanity Girl For the Day!

If you want in on the action, Maleeza is having an IN-SANE sale this weekend.  Designer names … low low prices.  Tell her VanityGirl sent you and Happy Shopping!  Make sure to Instagram me if you pick anything up @VanityGirlHollywood.

i spy eye candy! – Los Angeles | where in the world is lola?.

One of my favorite things to do EVER is travel and blog/host about it. Soooo fun.  This weekend, I will be doing a full-on staycation with the ladies of @FourPlayGo, a collective of Travel Content Creators.  I am going to be showing them MY LA, especially in around WeHo (natch) and beyond.

Here’s the first of the our posts as Ms. Lola lands in LA.  Make sure to follow us on Twitter to keep up with the festivities. I’ve never used that word before, but it seemed appropriate.

A lot of people have seen the great success the Vanity Girl Hollywood brand has had by garnering celebrity support.  It inevitably begs the question, “How do I get MY product/service into the hands of a _______ .”(name fave celeb here).

I’ve done celebrity gifting, celebrity gift suites and used direct contacts through Hollywood publicists (since this is where I live and stomp).  But I know not everyone has that access to just go to they gym or board meeting (Hi, Lisa Vanderpump 🙂 So, here is another great celebrity resource for you!

What to look for in a makeup brush

Join me as I catch up with my friend, Emmy-ward winning MUA KJ Bennett at the Royal Brush booth at the first annual PHAMExpo.  His brushes were born out of his “makeup artist angst” because he simply couldn’t find brushes that kept up with him!

I first met Kevin a few years ago when I was in New York and hung out with YouTube makeup guru @enkore makeup for the first time.  The three of us ended up in Chelsea over martinis and the rest they say … is history!

What lighting do makeup artists use?

Here’s another spotlight on a Pro Vanity Girl. Meet celebrity MUA Priscilla Ono, whom I met through Uber Blogger Kandee Johnson.  Priscilla has beat the faces of glamour girls like Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Paris Hilton, Amber Rose and Iggy Azalea!  Now you KNOW, those are some serious skills if they call on her to beat their face  And I’ve seen more than one instance where Ms. Amber Rose has been named “Best Makeup” on a Red Carpet, just sayin’ …

Anyway, Ms. Priscilla has a Black Vanity Desk of her very own in her LA Makeup Loft.  Here’s her video where she takes you through some of her daily things!

What she loves about her Broadway Desk .. or as she says in the video, “obsessed” 🙂

  • The Lifetime Warranty.  Yep, Vanity Girl is manufactured right here in LA and carries a lifestime warranty.
  • The adjustable light switch.  Every MUA (and home makeup junkie) should be able to control their lighting!
  • The holsters that hold her Croc Blowdryer and Hot Tools hair items.
  • The outlets that make everything from styling to airbrush makeup to watching YouTube tutorials a breeze when doing your makeup.
  • And of course, the nice warm lighting which she says is “amazing” for makeup application.

Make sure to watch the video to check out her video and her daily makeup must-have’s!

Vanity Girl and the Miss USA Pageant

Miss Connecticut crowned Miss USA 2013 via MSN News

So I just got back from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.  The hotel was even more sparkly than usual, as 51 bona fide US beauty queens and a bevy of teen hopefuls and others descended on the Vegas property to watch Miss Connecticut, Erin Brady, win the coveted title.  What I especially loved about her, is that she proudly talked about her math roots, and her “secret glamour” side.

We all have it… this secret glamour side. I was actually invited to Vegas by my friend, celebrity MUA and author, Kenetia Lee who works with the Trump Organization.  She put together a brand new workshop called Confidently Beautiful and it was attended by many  Miss Teen USA hopefuls and other women and girls, some who pageant and others who don’t, around what Confidently Beautiful means to them.

She invited me to be a panelist along with 2012 Miss USA Nana Meriwether, Cathryn Kennedy of St. Jude’s, Dorothy Evans Miss USA Fitness Expert and Dr. Lisa Palmer of Florida to serve as role models and share our very honest journeys with the attendees.  It also confronted us about our own personal journey with that elusive question of “what is confidently beautiful?

It makes a lot of sense.  A large majority of my Vanity Girl customers are young teens, just coming into their own when it comes to beauty, body image and confidence.  Yes, we love our makeup.  But we also love what makes us beautiful on the inside, flaws and all.

I was very honored to share my story.  I was even more honored when these bright and beautiful young women, and some of their mothers who beautifully are still launching some of their dreams, came up to me afterwards to share their own entrepreneurial dreams and ask my advice on their burgeoning projects!  It’s honestly my favorite part, whenever I speak, to get a little of that one-on-one time afterward and hear if something I said resonated and fanned a little fire inside someone’s heart.

I also learned so much from my fellow panelists.  Here are just a couple of very quick takeaways I learned from these accomplished and beautiful women:

Nana:  She is sooooo accomplished at such a young age.  I was inspired by how she turns “haters” and naysayers into fuel for her dreams.

Lisa:  Balance.  She is such a proponent for taking care of yourself and setting healthy boundaries for yourself and your loved ones.

Cathryn:  Kindness.  As a CFO type, she would seem to be all about the financial bottom line, but it was her humanity that struck me most.

Dorothy:  Loving the skin in your in.  No matter the shape and size, there is always room to take care of your physical body.

Kenetia:  Be Fearless.  Bold.  Beautiful and Free.

So Kenetia, thank you for inviting me and giving me a platform to share my Vanity Girl story.  To the other panelists, thank you for sharing your stories (yes, even the ugly parts!) and wisdom with everyone, and most of all, to those beautiful, shiny teen faces who attended, thank you for listening and I AM SO EXCITED to see what’s next for all of you.

xoxo
